Is It Easy To Get Car Insurance After a Drink Driving Conviction?

Feb 22, 2011

When it comes to calculating how much a person will have to pay for their car insurance, an insurance company will take a number of things into consideration.  What they are trying to evaluate is the risk associated with that person by looking at a number of factors.  They will take age, experience, address and the type of car you are driving into consideration as well as a number of other factors.  The people calculating your premium are called actuaries and they can usually make an accurate decision as to how much risk is involved in providing you with car insurance.

But what happens if you have been found guilty of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs?  If this has happened then you may have been banned from driving for a certain period of time or you could have points on your licence.  One way or another, an insurance company will know about this and you will find it hard to get insurance.  There is no point in hiding this fact either in order to get cheaper car insurance, because if you were to have an accident, the truth would come out and then this would invalidate your claim meaning that no matter how much you had been paying for insurance, it would have been a waste of money.

So if you have a drink driving conviction under your belt, you are going to find it very hard to get car insurance.  Most car insurance companies simply do not want to take the risk on you no matter how much you are willing to pay.  If you have another episode of drink driving, then you could cause a serious accident and could seriously injure someone or even kill someone.  This would leave the insurance company liable for a huge amount of money and they may feel that it is just not worth the risk.

If you do manage to find an insurance company that will insure you, then be prepared to pay for the privilege.  You could find that the price you will have to pay for your insurance now could be up to five times as much as you used to pay for insurance or even more.  So even if you have learned your lesson, the insurance company is going to see you as a higher risk.

Many people think that two or three alcoholic drinks will be okay and because they feel fine, they think that they will not have any problems driving their car.  However the legal limit is there for a reason and you should stick to it.  Never drink and drive no matter how ‘normal’ you feel.  Even if you feel okay, your reaction times could be affected by the alcohol in your system and you could have an accident as a result.  It could be the case that you react slower when someone steps off the pavement in front of you and you run into that person.  Imagine if that person were a child who was permanently disabled because of the accident or worse killed.  This would ruin so many people’s lives and all because you decided to drive your car after having a few drinks.

So as well as the devastation that this could cause, you would find it extremely difficult to get affordable car insurance again and surely this is just not worth it.
