What to Know When Making a Car Insurance Claim

Apr 12, 2011

Everyone has to have insurance if they are taking a car out on the road.  Not only is it going to provide you with a safety net in the case of an accident but it is the law.  When you take out insurance for your car, you will probably be hoping that you never have to make a claim on it but unfortunately for some people, this is exactly what happens.  If you are unlucky enough to be involved in an accident then you may have no choice but to make a claim.

When it comes to dealing with car insurance claims, it can prove to be quite a daunting task as you are going to have to deal with the insurance company adjusters.  However if you are in the situation where you have to make a car insurance claim, there are a few things you should know:

  • As soon as possible after the accident, you should make contact with your insurance company.  Whether or not you were to blame for the accident, you should contact your insurer to let them know what is going on.  It would be better if you were familiar with the claim procedures provided by your insurance company when you received your policy.  This will mean that you have some idea of the way the process works before you have to phone the insurance company.
  • You will have to provide a statement to the insurance company about what happened and it is important that you make sure to include as many details as you possibly can.  You may be asked to draw a diagram to help the insurers get an idea of what happened.  If you have any photos that were taken at the time of the accident, then include these as well.  Include the names of any witnesses to the accident as well as their contact details.
  • Make sure you keep detailed records of anything that relates to the claim including details of any phone conversations that you have with your insurance company or an adjuster working on their behalf.  Any receipts or bills for medical expenses or repair work to your car should be kept by you as well.
  • It is very important that you are totally honest when making a claim because failure to do so could result in your claim being invalidated and you could even be prosecuted for fraud.  Do not try to claim for more than the value of repairs to the car etc.

If you follow the advice above, your car insurance claim should go without a hitch.  The most important thing to remember is to be honest and keep detailed records.  This should ensure that there are no delays with your claim and that it does not turn into a stressful affair.
