How to Add Another Driver to your Car Insurance Policy

Jun 02, 2011

There may come a time when you want to add another driver to your current car insurance policy.  It could be the case that your spouse has learned to drive and after passing his or her driving test wants to get insured on the family car.  This could be the same with one of your children.  It could also be the case that you have guests staying with you and you would like to allow them to drive your car while they are staying.  If you do decide that you want to add another driver to your car insurance policy then there are a number of things you need to take into consideration first.  The following are some of the things to think about:

  • Should you actually add this person to your existing policy?  What you have to consider here is whether that person will be driving your car or whether you are planning to have two cars.  If you are getting another car and that car is going to be driven primarily by this other driver, then it might make sense to take out a separate insurance policy.
  • However if the new driver is a teenager, then you might want to save money by taking out a multi car insurance policy in your name and adding your son or daughter as a named driver on your policy.
  • In some instances a person with a valid driving licence will already be covered to drive your car under your insurance policy as long as you have given permission.  However, before letting anyone drive your car, it is important to check this with your car insurance company.

If you do have to add a new driver to your car insurance policy then you should follow the steps below:

  • Get in touch with your car insurance company to tell them you want to add a new driver to your existing car insurance policy.
  • Make sure you have all the details that the car insurance company will need.  You will be required to provide the new driver’s name, driving licence number, age, date of birth and address.  You will probably be asked to fax or post in a copy of the driving licence.  The cover should start immediately however, and will not be delayed until the copy of the licence is received.

You may decide that this is the best time for you to look around for a new car insurance policy.  Your own car insurance company might come up with a quote for this new driver that seems quite high and if this is the case then don’t forget that there are plenty of car insurance companies out there that would be willing to insure you.  Make sure you look around to get the best deals but compare a number of quotes to make sure you are getting the best cover at the best price.
